Pierce Transit Bus Rapid Transit Project FAQ

Pierce Transit, along with its planning partners, are in the final stages of planning an improved service called Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) along a 14.4-mile corridor on Pacific Avenue/State Route 7 between downtown Tacoma and Spanaway.

What makes BRT different from a typical bus route?
• More frequent service means riders have even more flexibility because the next vehicle is less than 15 minutes away (minimum 10-minute frequencies during peak travel times; 15-minute off-peak times).
• Enhanced, branded stations with real-time arrival information and improved lighting.
• Off-board fare collection, raised station platforms and multiple vehicle doors to speed up boarding.
• Traffic signals prioritize transit for faster travel times through congested intersections.
• Unique, branded vehicles that carry more passengers, have room for bicycles on board, and provide easier wheelchair access.
• A lower cost than many other modes, including light rail and street car.
• A system that better connects downtown Tacoma and the Tacoma Dome Station with the southern end of Pierce Transit’s service area in Spanaway, with stops near businesses, educational centers and other key destinations along the way.
